Surfing in Le Porge
THE SURFING GUIDE TO LE PORGE
Le Porge is a wide-open beach with different fun peaks depending on the sandbars. Being an exposed beachbreak means conditions can change a lot. It can be really good or bad depending on swell and wind direction. Le Porge is mostly popular with intermediate surfers.
Le Porge is the closest surf spot to Bordeaux so that means crowds during peak season and the weekends. Although, the line-up is not as competitive as the neighbouring Lacanau. A 20 minute walk up or down the beach from the carpark could be rewarded.

The waves
++ Advanced
++ Intermediates
++ Beginners
A 10 tot 12 second period swell is ideal. Especially if the waves are between 1-1,5 meters. There is good surf during all stages of the tide.
Be aware, this stretch of beach is highly exposed to onshore winds and sweeping longshore currents during bigger swells. Beginners watch out.
Best season to go
Spring and Autumn are the best seasons to go. The swell is more consistent, the water is relatively warm and the crowds are thinner.
Summer is a good option when you’re looking for smaller waves, warm water and lively camping.
During winter it often gets too big and too windy at Le Porge. Make sure you study the forecast and you might get lucky.

Favourable wind direction?
For the waves to have a good shape, the wind should have an eastern component in it. Le Porge is very exposed to the wind. So make sure to check the forecast.
Are you there in summer? Aim for the early mornings when the winds are mostly offshore. Sometimes the wind will die off in the evenings.
Where’s Le Porge?
Le Porge-Oceán is located in the Gironde, in the South West of France. As mentioned earlier, Le Porge is very close to Bordeaux. This makes it easy to reach with all types of transport. If Le Porge is not working, check out the close by Lacanau.

Where to stay in Le Porge?
Camping Municipal La Grigne is the perfect place to camp. Imagine waking up in a pine forest. Eating your breakfast while listening to the ocean. And then, just a 10 to 15 minutes walk to check out the morning surf. It’s a pretty large campsite though, so it can be pretty busy in summer.

Surf lessons and -rental?
There are two surf schools at the beach of Le Porge: Skeepskool Surf School and So Nice Surf School. Both surf schools offer surf lessons and surfboard rental. The latter also organizes surf camps together with Camping La Grigne.
The surf lessons take place on the north side of the beach. Away from the crowded central beach so you have all the room to practice. Have fun!
